Name Numerology Calculator — Chaldean & Pythagorean (Free)

A name numerology calculator converts each letter of your name into a number, then adds those numbers together. The total is your Expression number, also called your Destiny number or Name number. Vowels give your Soul Urge number and consonants give your Personality number. This tool runs both the Chaldean and Pythagorean systems and shows every step of the calculation.

Optional Steps

Steps 4 to 6 are optional. Enter a name on its own and you still get a complete result. Under each number you will find the letter-by-letter breakdown, so you can follow the arithmetic and check it by hand.

What your four name numbers mean

Every letter in your full name counts towards this one, vowels and consonants together. It describes the abilities you were handed rather than the ones you chose, which is why practitioners read it as your natural equipment for the work ahead. It tends to surface in the kind of tasks people keep asking you to handle without ever being told to. Use your birth certificate name for the Pythagorean reading. For Chaldean, use the name people actually call you day to day.

This one uses only the vowels: A, E, I, O, U, and Y when it sounds like a vowel. It points at motive rather than capability, so it answers what you want when no one is watching and nothing is expected of you. The clearest place to spot it is in how you spend a free weekend, or in the reason behind a decision that looked odd to everyone else. Some older texts call it the Inner Desire number.

Personality Number (Dream Number / Inner Dream Number)

Consonants alone produce this number, and it works as the outward layer of the reading. It describes the impression you make before you have said anything of substance, which makes it the number that matters in a first interview, a first date, or the first ten seconds of a sales call. People are often surprised by it, because the Personality number can sit quite far from the Soul Urge number. That gap is normal, and it is worth reading the two together.

Instead of adding letters up, this reading looks at which values are missing. Convert every letter in your name, then check which of the numbers 1 to 9 never appear at all. Each missing value is treated as an area you were not given a head start in, and traditionally as one you work on rather than inherit. Names with no missing values are less common than people expect. One point of accuracy: this is a Pythagorean reading. Chaldean never assigns 9 to any letter, so 9 cannot be counted as missing there.

Different traditions use different words for identical calculations. Use this table to match what you were taught to what appears in your result.

Soul Urge NumberHeart’s Desire Number, Inner Desire
Personality NumberDream Number, Inner Dream Number
Karmic LessonsMissing Numbers
Life Path NumberConductor Number, Bhagyank
Birth Day NumberDriver Number, Moolank, Psychic Number

Indian practice commonly uses Driver number for the digit taken from your birth day, and Conductor number for the total of your full date of birth. If you learned these terms as Bhagyank or Moolank, they map to the same numbers.

One warning about the word Destiny. In Western numerology it means the Expression number taken from your name. In much of Indian numerology it means the Conductor number taken from your date of birth. If a reading you have seen elsewhere gives a different Destiny number to the one shown above, this mismatch is usually the reason.

Chaldean or Pythagorean — which one should you use?

Use Chaldean with the name people actually call you. Use Pythagorean with your full name as written on your birth certificate. If the two give different answers, that is expected — they were built to measure different things, and neither result cancels the other.

Both systems have traceable authorship. The Pythagorean method as it is taught today was set out by L. Dow Balliett in the early 1900s and organised into a teaching system by Dr. Juno Jordan, whose work shaped most American numerology books that followed. The Chaldean compound-number readings you find repeated across the internet come from Cheiro — the pen name of William John Warner — in his Book of Numbers, first published in 1926. Where this page uses those readings, they are Cheiro’s, and we say so.

Which version of your name should you enter?

Your birth name shows what you started with. Your current name shows what you are working with now. Both are worth running.

  • Full birth certificate name — the standard input for a Pythagorean reading, middle names included.
  • Married name — read as your current working name. Many people run this alongside the birth name and read the two together.
  • Maiden name — still relevant if you used it through school and early career, since it carried you for those years.
  • The name colleagues use — the correct input for Chaldean, even if it never appears on a document.
  • Shortened forms — Mike and Michael are different names numerically. Enter whichever people actually say.
  • Initials — sound-based practice reads them only if you are introduced that way, as with A.J. or R.K.

Tick Compare Two Spellings to see any two of these side by side rather than running them one after another.

Spelling variations and transliterated names

Names carried across from Urdu, Hindi, Arabic, Tamil or Bengali have no single correct English spelling. The passport office, your parents and your school may each have chosen differently — and each choice produces a different number.

Lakshmi vs Laxmi (Chaldean)

  • L·A·K·S·H·M·I = 3+1+2+3+5+4+1 = 19 → 1+9 = 10 → 1
  • L·A·X·M·I = 3+1+5+4+1 = 14 → 1+4 = 5

Aisha vs Ayesha (Chaldean)

  • A·I·S·H·A = 1+1+3+5+1 = 11 → 2
  • A·Y·E·S·H·A = 1+1+5+3+5+1 = 16 → 7

Sanjay and Sanjai are a useful warning: both total 12 in Chaldean and reduce to 3, but in Pythagorean they split to 7 and 9. Two spellings can agree in one system and disagree in the other.

Use the spelling on the documents you use every day. Where your passport spelling and your daily spelling differ, run both with the compare option and read the daily-use one as the stronger signal.

The letter value charts

Chaldean

12345678
ABCDEUOF
IKGMHVZP
JRLTNW
QSX
Y

There is no column 9. Chaldean treats nine as a sacred number and assigns it to no letter, though a total can still reduce to 9.

Pythagorean

123456789
ABCDEFGHI
JKLMNOPQR
STUVWXYZ

The widest gaps between the two charts are at O (7 vs 6), U (6 vs 3), H (5 vs 8), X (5 vs 6) and Y (1 vs 7). Y also raises a second question — whether it counts as a vowel — which is handled below.

Worked example—how the math runs

Take the name Rohan Mehta, using Chaldean values.

Expression number — every letter:
R2 + O7 + H5 + A1 + N5 + M4 + E5 + H5 + T4 + A1 = 39
3 + 9 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3

Soul Urge number — vowels only (O, A, E, A):
7 + 1 + 5 + 1 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5

Personality number — consonants only (R, H, N, M, H, T):
2 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 5 + 4 = 25 → 2 + 5 = 7

Karmic Lessons — read in Pythagorean, where the same name gives the values 9, 6, 8, 1, 5, 4, 5, 8, 2, 1. The numbers 3 and 7 never appear, so those are the missing values.

Now the same name in Pythagorean for the Expression number:
R9 + O6 + H8 + A1 + N5 + M4 + E5 + H8 + T2 + A1 = 49
4 + 9 = 13 → 1 + 3 = 4

Chaldean gives 3, Pythagorean gives 4. Same name, different chart, different answer — which is why the system you choose matters.

Is Y a vowel in numerology?

Y counts as a vowel when it carries the vowel sound, and as a consonant when it opens a syllable with a consonant sound. Say the name aloud: if Y is doing the work a vowel would do, count it.

  • Lynn — Y is the only vowel sound. Counted, the Soul Urge is 1. Not counted, the name has no vowels at all.
  • Yvonne — the Y sounds like “ee”. Counted: 1+7+5 = 13 → 4. Not counted: 7+5 = 12 → 3.
  • Yolanda — the Y opens the name with a consonant sound. Not counted: 7+1+1 = 9. Counted, it shifts to 10 → 1, which most practitioners would call incorrect here.

The same logic applies to W in a small number of names, such as Bwana, where it carries a vowel sound.

Use the Y as a Vowel toggle to test both readings. If you are unsure, run it each way and keep the one that matches how your name is pronounced, not how it is spelled.

Compound numbers 10 to 52

Chaldean readings keep the two-digit total before reducing it. That is why 19/1 and 28/1 are not read the same way, even though both reduce to 1. The compound number describes the route; the single digit describes the destination.

Cheiro’s traditional names, from Book of Numbers:

10 Wheel of Fortune11 Clenched Hand12 The Sacrifice13 Upheaval and Change
14 Movement and Risk15 The Magician16 The Shattered Citadel17 Star of the Magi
18 The Rayed Moon19 Prince of Heaven20 The Awakening21 Crown of the Magi
22 The Good Man Blinded23 Royal Star of the Lion24 Gain Through Love25 Strength Through Trial
26 Grave Warning27 The Sceptre

Cheiro treats most compounds above 27 as repeating the meanings of the earlier series — 34 reads as 25, 36 as 27 — with 37, 43 and 51 carrying their own distinct force.

Practitioners do not fully agree here. Numerologist Novalee Wilder, for instance, works with the same compound range but different names and boundaries: 13/4 as Change, 14/5 as The Media, 22/4 as The Fool, 26/8 as Bad Advice. If a reading you have seen elsewhere uses unfamiliar labels, this is usually why. We follow Cheiro because his is the source most Chaldean material descends from, not because competing readings are wrong.

Rows 4 and 7 split by tradition. Cheiro was writing in Britain after the discoveries of Uranus in 1781 and Neptune in 1846, and assigned the two newly named planets to the two numbers left over. Vedic astrology, working from the older nine-graha framework, assigns those numbers to Rahu and Ketu — the lunar nodes, which are calculated points rather than physical bodies. The numbers, days, colours and stones stay the same either way. Only the planetary name changes. This tool follows the Chaldean-Cheiro line, so it shows Uranus and Ketu’s counterparts under both labels.

Business name numerology

Check the name customers say out loud, not the one on your incorporation certificate. If your company is registered as Northline Trading Private Limited but everyone calls it Northline, run Northline.

Leave off Ltd, Inc, LLC and Pvt. These are legal suffixes, not part of the name, and adding them distorts the total. For a domain, run the brand name without the extension — .com and .co are not part of what people call you.

Chaldean commercial tradition favours totals reducing to 1, 3, 5 and 6, and treats 4 and 8 with caution for trading names. Set your expectations honestly: this is inherited practice, not a forecast. A well-run business with an 8 name will outperform a badly-run one with a 6.

The useful move is comparison. Put three or four candidate names through the tool with the Business context selected and see how they sit next to each other before you register anything. Our business name numerology calculator covers this in full, including how to handle punctuation, multi-word names, and matching a name to your own birth number.

Baby name numerology

Use the full name you intend to put on the birth certificate, middle names included. That is what the Expression number is calculated from, and leaving out a middle name changes the answer.

Most parents arrive with a shortlist. Run each candidate and compare — the Compare Two Spellings option handles pairs, and repeating it works through a longer list quickly. Then add the due date or birth date to see the alignment score between the name and the date. Where you are choosing between spellings of the same name, remember that Aarav and Arav, or Zara and Zahra, are different numbers entirely. Our baby name numerology calculator goes further into this, including how to shortlist before the birth, whether the surname counts, and what changes once the name is registered.

Note. A name has to survive a school register, a job application and forty years of being said by people who love the child. Numerology is one input alongside meaning, family history, and how the name will sound on a playground in ten years. Parents who treat it as one voice among several tend to be happier with the outcome than those who let a number decide.

Changing your name or its spelling

Three different things get called a name change, and they carry different weight.

A legal change updates your documents. A professional or stage name never touches a document but may be what most people call you. A spelling adjustment — Neeta to Nita, Shreya to Shriya — keeps the sound and shifts the number.

In practice, the name in daily use carries the most weight, which means a change only registers once people are actually using it. A deed poll filed and then ignored changes very little. A working name adopted at a new job changes a great deal. Expect a transition period of months, not days.

On adding or dropping a letter to reach a target number: it works arithmetically, and it is a long-standing practice in Indian numerology. It also means answering to a slightly different name for the rest of your life. Test it in the calculator first, then live with it informally for a few weeks before committing.

A caution worth stating plainly. No responsible practitioner promises that a name change will produce money, a marriage or a recovery from illness. If someone is charging you on that promise, you are being sold something. A name adjustment is a change to how you present yourself. Treat any claim beyond that with scepticism.

About the calculations

  • Letter values. The Chaldean chart on this page follows Cheiro’s Book of Numbers (1926), the source from which nearly all published Chaldean material descends. The Pythagorean chart follows the standard A=1 through I=9 sequence established by L. Dow Balliett and formalised by Dr. Juno Jordan. Both charts are printed in full above so you can verify any result by hand.
  • Compound number readings. Taken from Cheiro, and credited to him throughout rather than presented as our own. Where other schools read the same compounds differently, we say so.
  • Arithmetic verification. Every calculation this tool performs was checked against manually worked examples across both systems, including edge cases: names with no vowels, hyphenated surnames, repeated letters, and totals that land on 11, 22 and 33. If you find a result that does not match your own working, tell us and we will publish a correction.
  • Privacy. All calculation runs in your browser. The name you type is never sent to a server, never logged, and never stored. Closing the tab removes it. There is no sign-up and no email required.

What numerology can and can’t tell you

Numerology is a symbolic tradition with a long documented history, not a tested science. There is no evidence that letters carry measurable energy, and no study supports the readings on this page.

What it does well is give people a structured way to think about a name — useful when you are choosing one for a child, a business, or yourself.

What it cannot do is predict health, legal or financial outcomes. No number is unlucky in a way that requires a paid remedy. If anyone tells you your name is blocking your money and offers to fix it for a fee, that is a sales pitch.

Frequently asked questions

Is this calculator free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no email and no paid tier. Every feature on the page works without an account.

Do you store my name?

No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser, so the name is never sent to a server or logged. Closing the tab removes it.

Chaldean or Pythagorean — which is more accurate?

Neither is more accurate; they answer different questions. Chaldean reads the name people call you, Pythagorean reads your full birth name.

Why do the two systems give different numbers?

They assign different values to the same letters. Chaldean uses 1–8 and never assigns 9, while Pythagorean runs A=1 through I=9 and repeats.

Should I use my full name or nickname?

Full birth name for Pythagorean, everyday name for Chaldean. Running both is common practice and often more revealing than either alone.

What are master numbers 11, 22 and 33?

Pythagorean totals that are left unreduced rather than broken down to 2, 4 and 6. Chaldean does not use them and reads compound numbers 10–52 instead.

What’s my lucky number based on my name?

Traditionally your Expression number, along with its ruling planet’s days and colours. Treat it as a preference, not a rule.

Can I change my destiny by changing my name?

A name changes how you present yourself, not what happens to you. It affects first impressions and how you are addressed, which is real but limited — no reputable practitioner promises more.

Does my middle name count?

Yes, for the Expression number in Pythagorean, since it uses your complete birth certificate name. Chaldean uses whatever name is in daily use, middle name or not.

What if my name has no vowels?

Names like Ng or Brynn have no A, E, I, O or U. Tick Y as a Vowel where a Y is present; where there is genuinely no vowel sound, the Soul Urge number is not calculated.
